This morning two Chinese students took me for a bike ride to a street with a lot of antique and traditional art shops. Most of the wares were not antique at all, but fairly good looking copies of ancient vases and various other collectables. Large pieces of wood and twisted roots, highly polished and laquered, as well as piles of rocks of different size. Elements of nature only find their way into Chinese homes after being polished and oiled to a shiny object of desire.
One of the art galleries was having a calligraphy class for children, which was nice to watch, even more so because I will be doing the same every week starting next Saturday. Tomorrow I will have an introductory meeting.
These kids are already way ahead of me in writing skills, so I can learn something by just watching them practice. The challenged me to also write something, so I set my name in ink. Actually not that bad of a job!
