Last night was the opening of an outdoor film screening programme at the Chinese European Art Center, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The One Minutes, a Dutch art institute dedicated to (very) short films of exactly one minute duration.
The event was a great succes, visited by a nice crowd of mainly students from the Art College of Xiamen University, and other guests. I went to the opening with Qi Miao, one of my Chinese student friends. She has spent half a year in Utrecht last spring as an exchange student. At the event I had the opportunity to meet Sigurdur Gudmundsson, a renowned artist from Iceland with the stature of a Viking, and the husband of CEAC founder Ineke Gudmundsson. He was joking that here in Xiamen he is only known as the husband of, while in Holland it's the other way around, with Ineke being the wife of.
There were more foreigners present, some Danes, some Dutch, and some others. There was no representation of The One Minutes Foundation, but that did not harm the good atmosphere. The screening doubled as a barbecue party, with a continuous supply of charcoal-grilled chicken skewers, fish, squid, tofu, and veggies. In the coming week there will be three more events like this, each time with a different selection of One Minutes.
