Cold and wet

During the past week the temperature has dropped steadily until it fell under 10 degrees last night. Grey skies with an almost continuous drizzle and occasional showers, brrr! Time to figure out the remote control of my air-conditioning, to see if it also doubles as a heater. I suspect it does, but pressing random buttons did not produce any hot air. So, I sat down and figured out all the Chinese text. The pink on/off button is pretty obvious, so knowing the characters 开/关 (kāi/guān) already wasn't such a big help. The rest was pretty much a mystery, but with the help of my phone dictionary (using the wubi input method), I was able to translate it.
The label at the top reads 设定温度 (shèdìng wēndù) or "set temperature". Hardly surprising, given the (°C) following it and the fact it's an A/C remote.
The three labels to the left of the display are:
自动 (zì dòng): automatic
制冷 (zhì lěng): refrigerate
抽湿 (chōu shī): dehumidify
These are the operating modes, so this already tells me it's no heater. The three labels on the right of the display are different settings for fan speed (风 or fēng means "wind"). Below the display are the obvious temperature up/down buttons. Then there are some buttons for fan direction and timer settings. The rest I didn't bother to translate.
I guess I will have to survive the winter by putting more clothes on, or buy an electric heater if it gets really cold. Fortunately the winters here are quite mild, with minimum temperatures always above zero, and daytime highs normally in the 10s. Yesterday was exceptionally cold for this time of year, likewise in Western Europe. Luckily, today there was a blue sky again, and the weather forecast tells me it will be above 20 degrees again after the weekend.
