When I came home from class this afternoon, there was no electricity in my apartment. After checking the fuse box, which was ok, I soon came to the conclusion that there must have been unpaid bills.
The ice-cream in my freezer had already melted, but the beer was still mildly chilled. I rushed to the property management office to settle things. My Chinese lessons are starting to pay off. I could utter some words which were actually understood, and with the help of the Chinese equivalent of Google translate on the office PC, the staff could explain me where to pay the outstanding bills.
One staff member was so kind to drive me there on his electric bike. It was already 10 to 5, almost closing time for the utility company China Southern Power Grid. Their office is right next door to the China Gas Pipeline Corporation, where I had been earlier, after the gas supply was shut off. Gas is piped into my apartment through a meter fitted with a chip-card reader. It was showing 'Err 09' since I moved in, but had delivered gas anyway. For a few days at least. When the gas supply was cut (resulting in a unexpected cold shower) I also went down to the property management office, who had told me where to go to charge my chip-card. After I had credited it with 200 RMB (good for 45 cubic meter), the gas started flowing again.
The unpaid electricity bills amounted to 163 RMB. Apparently there were unpaid bills dating back to March this year. The previous renter had given me 100 RMB at the time of signing the contract, but at that time I was not able to get a clear picture of how much was still due in unpaid utility bills. Nobody seemed to care about it too much, and I had hesitantly accepted the 100 RMB, not knowing the current state of affairs. What else could I do?
Anyway, it was almost enough to cover the damage, so I don't care anymore. Hopefully power will be restored soon. At this moment my laptop is running on battery power. Internet comes right out of the wall, as part of the building infrastructure, so I don't need power for a modem or router.
I will take a shower before it gets dark, I might have to wait until tomorrow to see the light turn on again. I guess I won't be doing any homework this evening...
