Last Sunday, at Renmin Park, I had bought some small comic books from the 80s. Only slightly larger than a playing card, torn and worn, with faded colors on yellow paper. These tiny cartoons were very popular in the 80s, all my Chinese friends grew up with them. I choose three booklets from the piles of material on offer. This one is my favourite: featuring a small boy with super powers and a big heart. He reminds me of Astro Boy from Japan, and I can almost read it!
I didn't bring a bag, so I asked Li Jun (the cute calligrapher) to keep my little treasures in her bag, but then forgot to take them out when we said goodbye. Today I met her after class to pick them up. She surprised me by giving me a porcelain brush holder for my calligraphy brushes. Apparently she had noticed I was looking at some nice old ones at the market, but I didn't buy one there because of the high prices. How thoughtful and sweet of her!
